Coding Camp Outline

Build your very own app today! Our AppThinker workshop brings young creators through creating and designing a simple and fully functional mobile app.

The 1-day holiday camp is a specially curated camp for the September 2020 School Holidays. We want to help engage children in a challenging and fun way during this period of extended home-based learning.

Students will be taught new programming concepts, and practice them in their coding challenges. Students will be grouped into classes with similar ages and capabilities. The class sizes are kept small at 6 students per class to ensure teachers can spend time helping individual students.

1. Proprietary Learning Management System

Student Web is Computhink’s proprietary system for our student’s learning needs, where students will log in every day, and find notes, exercises and short videos explaining concepts for the day.

2. Online Virtual Classroom

Virtual Classroom conducted over secure Zoom Web Conferences. Not to worry, we are technology experts and have put in a secure environment to ensure the online safety of your child.

3. Online Coding Platform

Students will each have their own student coding account (Gmail account required) where they will code their daily projects, and transfer their projects to their Android mobile phones. Projects and accounts are stored online and accessible forever.

4. Online Assessments

Online Quizzes and Assignments – Students will be tested on understanding via online quizzes and assignments.

FAQ

Item1

Is this coding class conducted online?

Yes! During the September 2020 school holiday, this class will be conducted fully online! Not to worry, we have been doing fully online classes since early 2020 and have a fully equipped Online Virtual Classroom for the best online learning experience for your child!

What do I need for the Virtual Classroom?

Your child will need a laptop/ computer with a strong wifi connection. Please ensure that the web camera on the laptop is in good working condition.

For the AppThinker Class, you will need a working Android Mobile Device and a Gmail Account (Please refer to https://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/setup). Please note that Apple iOS devices are not supported at this moment.

For parents with younger kids, you may need to stay with your child during the first lesson to help them operate the computer (e.g. where to click, and how to switch windows etc).

Why do I need an Android device and Google Account?

The workshop uses MIT App Inventor that runs on the Android operating system and requires you to sign in with a Gmail Account. (Please refer to https://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/setup)

Why does my child need prior experience in Scratch to attend this workshop?

App Inventor is a block-based drag and drop programming tool used to code mobile apps.

It is quite similar to Scratch, however, the codes and blocks are significantly harder. We want to ensure the best learning experience, and students who are new to Scratch or coding may find this course too challenging.

It is recommended for students age 11 and above, or for expert scratch programmers.

If my child is younger than 11 years old, can he/she still attend this workshop?

We recommend that your child try out our ScratchThinker classes that cater to the 7 to 12 age band.

If your child has previous programming experience, and you feel that he/she can enrol in this workshop, please write to us at classes@computhink.com.sg or Whatsapp us at +65 8858 6173.

How does attending the Beginner AppThinker class help in laying the foundation for my kid’s future?

Developments in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Mobile Connectivity, Big Data, and the Internet of Things, have raised the collective capabilities of these technologies and combined them into networked services that would soon render a number our current skill-sets obsolete. It used to be thought that computers and machines will only be able to replace jobs which are repetitive in nature, however, it is estimated that 40-60% of jobs will soon be replaceable by computers.

The ability to understand and write computer programmess will empower your kid with the skills to navigate, understand and perhaps create this computational future. In whichever profession that your kid may enter in the future, it is certain that programming and logical thinking skills would be a key part of it.
