FAQ

Item1

Do I need to bring my own mobile phone to the class?

Yes, bringing your own mobile phone will be recommended so you can test your apps immediately on your phone.

Android and iPhone devices are both supported.

Is this coding class conducted online or onsite?

Both Online and Onsite options are available.

Onsite classes will be conducted at Computhink@TPYLibrary. Online classes will be conducted via Zoom.

What do I need for the Virtual Classroom?

Your child will need a laptop/ computer with a strong wifi connection. Please ensure that the web camera on the laptop is in good working condition.

For the AppThinker Class, you will need a working Android/ iPhone Mobile Device and a Gmail Account (Please refer to https://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/setup).

For parents with younger kids, you may need to stay with your child during the first lesson to help them operate the computer (e.g. where to click, and how to switch windows etc).

Why do I need an Android/ iPhone device and Google Account?

The workshop uses MIT App Inventor which runs on the Android/ iOS operating system and requires you to sign in with a Gmail Account. (Please refer to https://appinventor.mit.edu/explore/ai2/setup)

Why does my child need prior coding experience to attend this workshop?

App Inventor is a block-based drag and drop programming tool used to code mobile apps.

It is quite similar to Scratch, however, the codes and blocks are significantly harder. We want to ensure the best learning experience, and students who are new to Scratch or coding may find this course too challenging.

It is recommended for students age 11 and above, or for expert scratch programmers.

If my child is younger than 11 years old, can he/she still attend this workshop?

We recommend that your child try out our ScratchThinker classes that cater to the 7 to 12 age band.

If your child has previous programming experience, and you feel that he/she can enrol in this workshop, please write to us at classes@computhink.com.sg or Whatsapp us at +65 8858 6173.

How does attending the Beginner AppThinker class help in laying the foundation for my kid’s future?

Developments in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Mobile Connectivity, Big Data, and the Internet of Things, have raised the collective capabilities of these technologies and combined them into networked services that would soon render a number our current skill-sets obsolete. It used to be thought that computers and machines will only be able to replace jobs which are repetitive in nature, however, it is estimated that 40-60% of jobs will soon be replaceable by computers.

The ability to understand and write computer programmess will empower your kid with the skills to navigate, understand and perhaps create this computational future. In whichever profession that your kid may enter in the future, it is certain that programming and logical thinking skills would be a key part of it.
