How to choose a coding class

Six questions worth asking any school before you sign up.

1

Will my child start at the right level?

A class that is too easy bores a child, and one that is too hard puts them off.

At Computhink:a free 30-minute level assessment sets the starting track and level.

2

Is there a clear path ahead?

Weekly classes pay off when each level leads to the next, from first blocks to typed code.

At Computhink:a progressive curriculum from Scratch at 7 to Python, web development and machine learning for teens.

3

How big are the classes?

Smaller groups mean more time with the teacher.

At Computhink:classes are kept small, so the teacher coaches every child.

4

Will my child build real projects?

Look for lessons where children make games, robots and programs they can show you.

At Computhink:every lesson ends with a showcase of what the children made.

5

How will I see progress?

Ask how the school measures progress and how it reports to parents.

At Computhink:children move up a level by completing a task on their own, and you get a report at the end of each semester.

6

Who is teaching?

Questions parents ask

What age should my child start coding classes?

Many children start at 7 with Scratch, Minecraft or LEGO robotics. Typed languages such as Python usually suit children from about 11 or 12.

Scratch or Python: which should my child learn first?

Most children under 11 do well starting with Scratch, where they learn how programs work without typing code. Older children, and younger ones with Scratch experience, can start with Python.

Is coding still worth learning now that AI can write code?

Yes, and the reason has changed. AI can produce code, but someone has to decide what to build, spot when the result is wrong, and fix it. Children who learn to code learn to do exactly that.

Coding class or robotics class: which is better?

Robotics suits children who like building with their hands, and game-based coding suits children who love games. Both teach breaking a problem into steps and testing ideas.

Onsite or online classes?

Younger children usually do best onsite, with a teacher beside them. Online classes suit older children who can work through a task on their own.
